Too Much On Your Blog?

Since I have BlogDumps.com as one of my web sites I do a lot of blog surfing. I have to look at the new blogs that have been submitted to the BlogDumps Blog Directory and make sure every one meets the guidelines of the site.

As I visit these sites, I noticed that some blogs load fast and others don’t. What I have found is that most of the blogs that don’t load fast are the ones who have way to much on their page. I realize that some people blog for fun and relaxation and others are blogging for dollars, but that really doesn’t matter at this point because this actually effects both types.

The blogs for fun and adventure on the web that load slow have way to many third party scripts, clubs and awards that call to another server, their blog has to go get and then load these other files from elsewhere.
The same thing happens to the blogs that are blogging for dollars. Affiliate ads, Google Adsense, Analytics, awards and a ton of third party files have to be called in order for the page to load. Slow loading causes a new visitor to your blog to just move on, especially if they are on dial up or satellite and you have videos all over the place.

I have looked at some of the new WP themes and OMG they don’t miss a pixel you can put information everywhere on the page. I visited one recently and after a few tries, finally gave up! There was way to much on the page to wait for it all to load.

I have found that to use your blog to it’s fullest, less is more. I know you want all that stuff on your site or you want those clicks… So what to do? Well, you saw it when you arrived today – a static front page with links to what might be of interest to your visitor. Link from your static page to your awards page or if you are blogging for dollars or for web services work add links to those pages and then of course a link to your blog. Make the static page simple with a small amount of graphics, just enough to show who you are and then links to all the pages and to your blog. Or in my case to my Web Design Store and to my blog because I think both are just as important.

In the case that you are a business that actually sells different products to consumers from a store and you use your blog for a convenience to your customers, you don’t want them to wait for a long loading page.

So the solution is a simple static front page, a nice background, a simple header and some links to specific parts of your site. Make sure to give the right impression to whatever your niche is (Music, Web design, Coffee store or just a stay at home mom that is blogging for fun) and what your interests are. A simple “About the Author” or “About the Company” in the middle of the page that’s not too wordy and lets visitors know what to expect is great.

Using a WordPress blog, this can be done simply through your pages by creating one to be a static front page. It’s not like you can’t change it around every now and then to spice it up or to add or remove links. You will find the page will load much faster and you will see visitors that just want to read your latest post will go there or maybe they will go straight to your store etc… it gives the visitor control of what they want to see instead of bombarding them with a ton of information that they have to figure out what all of it is and then decide what they want to visit… Too many steps and Bam! a bigger bounce rate.

Don’t forget Title and tags on your static page for the search engines and make sure there isn’t a on robot no follow on the static page also.

I hope this helps, Have a great day

Top Sites Tuesday #38 – What do you Want from Santa

What do I want from Santa?

Santa

A day of fun and happiness for all the kids, not just mine but all children. There are so many that do without this time of year, so if I get to ask Santa for a few things this would be one of them. One of my doctor friends does a toy drive and gives free visits to people that bring in a toy for the kids, this to me is the real meaning of Santa. I don’t even think he realizes but he is Santa to so many needy kids it’s great!

If I were to ask Santa for something for myself it would be High speed internet on the farm! I know this is a far reach but I guess I can only wish for what I would really like to have. Out here on the farm when I have to work, the internet comes in on satellite. It’s fast but not as fast as cable… It would be so nice I could get so much more work done on the web 🙂 I wouldn’t have to make the trip to town as often, I could stay here and just enjoy the peace and quiet of the farm while I work.

Have a great Tuesday
Wolf

Top Sites Tuesday – Thought of the Day

My thought of the day is Daylight Savings Time.

Why do we have to have it anyway? I don’t like it being dark and having to turn on the headlights on my way home after work. It’s awful. So do I have to change mine!? What if I boycott… LOL

Who the heck came up with this stupid idea of messing the the clocks anyway… I’m going to Google it.

Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn. Modern DST was first proposed in 1895 by George Vernon Hudson, a New Zealand entomologist. Many countries have used it since then; details vary by location and change occasionally.

Well, Mr. Hudson, I suppose you had an good reason for playing with all the clocks in the world, but I wish mine could be left alone. Of course when daylight savings ends and we seemingly gain and hour of sleep in the morning most people like it – we all get that extra hour to relax. This afternoon though, I found myself staring at a clock that had yet to be adjusted, it was telling me that it was 6:30 and I was not home yet. In the Spring when we loose that hour of sleep, everyone complains and is late for work – or dragging in sluggish and tired.I think Mr. Hudson was one of those that got up at 4:30 am and went to bed early so it didn’t matter to him… So it’s time to ask Google again… Oh Google, why do we have Daylight Savings Time?

Modern DST was first proposed by the New Zealand entomologist George Vernon Hudson, whose shift-work job gave him leisure time to collect insects, and made him aware of the value of after-hours daylight. In 1895 he presented a paper to the Wellington Philosophical Society proposing a two-hour daylight-saving shift, and after considerable interest was expressed in Christchurch, New Zealand he followed up in an 1898 paper. Many publications incorrectly credit DST’s invention to the prominent English builder and outdoorsman William Willett, who independently conceived DST in 1905 during a pre-breakfast ride, when he observed with dismay how many Londoners slept through a large part of a summer day. An avid golfer, he also disliked cutting short his round at dusk. His solution was to advance the clock during the summer months, a proposal he published two years later.

Well, in that case, may all you bug collectors and golfers enjoy your daylight savings… Me Can’t we just leave the clocks alone!?

Happy Tuesday,
Wolfbernz

Top Sites Tuesday – Octoberfest

My favorite fall festival is the leaf festival in the Virginia Mountains.

We went to the festival last weekend and it was so much fun! The turning of the leaves is so beautiful and I love the views from top of near-by mountains, it’s just breathtaking!

Fall Leaves

The people in Virginia are so very courteous and nice, I really enjoy going there 🙂

While we were that, I somehow got talked into hiking up a mountain. Ont he way up I kept asking people coming down “How Much Longer” the first person said “15 minutes” The second person I asked said “Maybe 15-20 minutes….

after 15 minutes of climbing, I realized I had asked the wrong question. The next passers-by I asked “Is it worth it?” and they said “Oh yes, it’s well worth it” So we continued to climb…

Below is a picture of me on a rock at the edge of the cliff at the top of the mountain. Trina couldn’t take the picture, she just knew the rock was going to fall down the mountain at any time! So Irene took the picture and I was immediately told to get off the rock 😉

Happy Tuesday!
