Where’s The Beef?

Some might think I’m writing about a fight but those that remember the commercial will know where I am going with this…lol

We worked hard yesterday and it was really hot out we are working on a house in need of some repair and clean up. Trina had to make a quick run to the store for supplies and came back with a few McDonald’s ice teas. Surprisingly they hit the spot, after all it was in the high nineties.

I was about spent not realizing it was late and six in the evening so we loaded up and off we went. Trina said “I am so thirsty” – me too – “We should go get a couple of those ice tea’s they hit the spot.”

It wasn’t that far out of the way to go to McDonald’s on the way home so we headed that direction and when we got there they had a special on a Big Mac and fries for a couple bucks. I don’t eat there normally but I said to Trina we should just get something to eat it’s late and by the time we get home neither of us will want to make or do anything about food, we’re so tired.

My First thought was: Crap I hope this isn’t going to be a bad idea I am not too sure about eating here!

So we went through the line in seconds flat, I have no idea how they can move that many people through the line so fast it’s incredible!

We got our food and then I thought what the heck lets park in the shade, down some cool ice tea, and eat our sandwiches. I opened the box and looked at the Big Mac and the first thing that came to mind was were is the beef? I said “hey Trina do you think they could have made this any thinner?” I am a carpenter I know what 1/8 inch looks like and it could not have been much thicker than that!

So my second though is where the heck do they get this beef from and how do they cook it and keep it together? There is no way they are cooking them on site and having them so consistent in size.
I did eat and I didn’t die from it but I don’t know if I will be getting another one soon especially for the price when it is not on sale. I will stick to the ones they make while you wait I think it is worth it to get something a bit better.

Have a great Tuesday

Electricity New post Top Sites Tuesday

Electricity Hmmmmm, Just a thought!

Electricity is fascinating to me as you all know. I have been reading about Nikola Tesla’s Aerial System.
I have found it so interesting that there is electricity able to be captured this way.
A small module can be built that will work and capture electric for a few bucks. I know this seems crazy.

As I read on in the PDF found here I was more interested in Thomas Henry Moray’s System This man was very talented to say the least.

He created a very cool device that could produce electricity and it was self contained device. This device weighed in at fifty pounds and was tested in many places to prove it’s workability. If you want to read some interesting history and how we really don’t have to use the fossil fuel check out the link.
It’s no wonder that someone tried to assassinate him and threatened his family, he quit working on this and moved on to medical devices. His machine destroyed etc… I am not surprised to say the least but as a thought, how would things be if he was praised for his work and encouraged to continue? I wonder if we would have self sufficient homes with one of these devises? If the self contained device weighed in at fifty pounds so long ago I bet it would even be smaller with today’s technology.

I think it would be a fun project to try to build one of the smaller devices that Tesla or Moray designed, just to try it. I have the room here on the farm and all the other farmers around me would just say there he goes again I wonder what the heck he is building now…lol As I string my 57 foot insulated wire between two poles.

What is really interesting is that with one antenna there is no limit to how many modules that can be used so thought number two of the day is if one works then twenty would be that much better right?

Some fun thoughts- OK for us geeks maybe – for this weeks Two thoughts

A Reflection On Tuesday

I mentioned that we had a big storm here the other night in my comment on BlogDumps. It was a big one with seventy mile an hour winds…. WOW!
Trina and I had worked all day putting in a new parking lot at our doctors office ( a friend of ours too) It had to be the hottest day of the year.  We both agreed we should start early to beat the heat, so we did we got up early and headed out to pick up the first load of crush and run driveway material.

The truck runs hot inside the cab and has no air conditioner, so glad we got up!
So the first load – we go to dump it and drive down the parking lot (less tractor work this way) and the right front break line blows out and I am headed into the road with Trina yelling stop and me yelling “It don’t stop no more! Help me! It don’t stop no more!!!!!” Finally it came to enough of a stop that I put it in reverse and I backed into the driveway. We spent the next few cooler hours removing and replacing the break line, bleeding the breaks and then we were back on the road.

We go get three more loads and then off to get the tractor. It was hotter than you know what by then and with all the down time we should have been on our way home. I thought to myself out loud “Why is it always on the hottest days?”
All went well, we got the tractor and off we went to finish up – no big thing right! Now it is in the afternoon around 3 and it’s blazing hot. All was going well then the tractor started to stall out for no reason.  It did this about five or six times and now it is getting late and it’s over a hundred degrees and it quits all together with a few touch ups to go before we were done.  So we shovel some and wait… it won’t start so I said “Forget it lets get the trailer and winch it on there and go – we still have pumpkins to water.”

We get the trailer and start to try to load it and then Trina tries it and it starts…. go figure. I yelled to her “back it up and we will try to finish and then load it up.” It was late and we finished it up and were on our way home to the farm it was nine o’clock when we finally got there.

We were dead, head swimming and exhausted. One of the guys had started the watering so we went and laid down in the air conditioning. Then the storm started, it blew through here hard like a hurricane we both thought who cares at this point, at least the driveway is getting watered and the pumpkins are loving the extra water.

Then the phone rings… My son tried to out run the coming storm and get home – he was on his motorcycle and this storm popped out of no where. He had crashed when the wind blew him and the bike off the road! So we loaded up in the car and headed out to go see what happened. Long story short (it would take another blog post) He is OK a lot of bumps and bruises and a small compression fracture in his back that will heal on its own in time.

He is so lucky it all went down the way it did or it would have been awful bad. I thought this day would never end and I was right it didn’t it went right on into the next day. My last thought is when he said to me in the emergency room quietly “I guess I will fix my bike and just sell it, my son needs his father” Thought number two… I just wanted to beat his ass, I told him not to get that damn bike! I said son I really wish you would have listened to me on the first place a father needs his son too.
I am so glad things are trying to be normal again I hope it stays that way.

Have a great Tuesday

Deep Creek Lock To Hampton VA.

So we made it, we are at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, I almost can’t believe it myself. We are tied to the docks here at Hampton and plan to leave out at six am into the Chesapeake Bay. The weather is supposed to be in our favor according to the weather man… LOL So I guess I should get out my foul weather gear!!!

We entered the lock early this morning and then headed north on the Elizabeth River going under bridges waiting for others to raise so we could pass. At one point we had to just drift around for almost an hour before they would open the bridge.

One of the most exciting events of the day was dodging the big container ships. The Norfolk area is a very busy port full of ships, navy and many personal boats.

This brings me to my first thought… I have been told that the container ships loose one or two of those big containers now and then and to be very careful because they may be heavy but they still float just below the water. I don’t know how you feel about this but I could not even begin to imagine running into such a thing on the water! I would hope they would report such a disaster fast to mariners with the gps location.

My second thought is I can’t wait to get out into some open water and not worry about channel markers and which creek or river we should be going through, Just sailing away and no worries of what might be coming around the next bend in the river like this morning when the ship and tugs met us at a turn and was taking up the whole river! Just a couple more days across the bay and we will be home after six months and two thousand plus miles 🙂

Have a great Tuesday

New post Sailing Top Sites Tuesday

Two Thoughts, Ok Maybe Three

I can’t believe another week has gone by already, time is just flying by with a blur.

The last time I posted we were in Turner Creek, Georgia, and since then we have made it all the way through Georgia and the swamplands full of alligators and snakes to Florida. We made really good time – we arrived here at Beach Marine in Jacksonville Beach on Saturday morning. Although we made good time it seems like weeks have past since Turner Creek.

When we left Turner Creek and headed south, we knew a storm was coming so we had to make plans ahead of time to stop. I had been watching the weather and had a plan to make it to Morningstar Marina just before the storm hit.

All good plans – or should I say best laid plans – don’t seem to always work out. About twelve o’clock mid day the sky turned ugly with dark clouds the high winds going one way and the low wind going right in our face, no sailing today. Trina and I talked about how bad it was starting to look and decided we would go a bit further and checked the charts for an “out” if it got real bad. Of course it got bad before they predicted, we should have had until three in the afternoon but not to our surprise at two o’clock the sky was dark as just before nightfall and the wind had picked up to thirty knots with super high gusts.

The boat started to feel real small as it was tossed around like a toy boat in a bath tub. We decided we would not make it to the first choice destination at this point we were getting slammed. We decided to go up a river, the South Altamaha, about four miles inland, even though it had cautions of high currents and that it is almost impossible to go in or out against the current. There was no choice at this point, we had heard over the radio the transmission of the boat called the Blue Moon that they were at the scene of another boat that had flipped and capsized – they were picking people out of the water.

If you have never been out there, the sheer terror of all this going on and you are in the same water listening to it unfold makes one realize the decisions we make can save a life. We were glad to be in the river for sure. The entrance to the river was an ugly one and I wasn’t sure we were supposed to go in there, to our luck we made it into the river at slack tide, no current. We were relieved to a degree, it seemed to be the longest four miles of the whole trip. We traveled turning the nose of the sailboat into the wind as the high gusts seem to want to put us on our side. I was very happy to see the marina up ahead after that last turn as the rain started to fall and the wind was gusting to fifty four miles an hour. The dock hands ran to the boat and helped us tie it in, it was safe and so were we. Then it was done – over just like that- in three hours the front had passed and we were sitting in the restaurant having a sandwich it was still windy but the sun even tried to come out.

This brings me to my first thought can you imagine what those guys on the other boat were thinking when they landed in the water? OMG… I couldn’t even guess myself.

We were told to head out as soon as we could in the morning to beat the tide or we would have to wait for the next tide that would occur on the next day. We gathered our things and headed out down the river the tide was high and it looked so different. We were headed out the same way we went in but it kept getting too shallow – at two points we just touched the bottom, almost ran aground, and then we realized just how lucky we were the day before, or was it luck?

This brings me to my next thought, earlier I mentioned what good time we had made and about the decisions that we make. We almost didn’t leave that morning but something said leave so we did, we made it to a perfect anchorage with the dolphins coming right to the sailboat and in just a couple days we were putting out dock lines here at Beach Marine, Jacksonville Beach, Florida, just before the next big storm. So my second thought is – It’s good to follow that gut instinct and I am glad we did the next storm lasted for three days with high winds and four inches of rain every twenty four hours!

So we are safe and sound and the sun has returned we will be here for the week and fly home next Tuesday for the holidays with the kids. Driving the car back so we can have wheels while we are here.

Just Wondering Why On Tuesday

It has been a great start to this week – I said I wasn’t going to start any new projects as I wrote in my last post but I was wandering around the shop and I looked at my 1999 SUZUKI DR350. It has 1350 miles on it. It is or was in need of a full going over because it has been sitting for the last year and for those that know about motors and carburetors with the new gas, they go to you know where very fast.

I really didn’t want to tackle another project but to see it just sit there not running and in need of cleaning and tuning, I just couldn’t take it. So I took the bike apart. Yes it was in pieces all over the concrete. I had to pry the gas cap off the tank and it was rusted over inside. The carburetor was full of old gas and stuck open and flooded the oil with gas. The on and off valve was leaking gas all over the floor. The whole bike needed to be detailed and the battery would not take a charge.

I flushed the gas tank and power washed it until it was clean. While the bike was apart I washed it completely. I emptied all the old gas out of the carb, installed a new battery and new valve for the gas. I had to fill and drain the oil five times to get all the gas and nasty out of it – when the float valve in the carburetor gets stuck it fills the oil with gas, exciting to say the least. This was beginning to be a chore but I continued until I could put most of the bike together and see if it would start… Low and behold it started and ran.

I thought, “how cool tomorrow I will finish this up and off I will go for a ride before winter and this time I will winterize it like I should.” So I quit for the day it was getting dark.

So this morning I thought, “Cool, I let the battery charge up all night so I have to see how good it starts.” It did great. But I wanted a new air filter, why not I was almost done with this motorcycle, what’s an air filter? I searched for a new one and could not get one so I cleaned and repaired the old one and reinstalled it, itworked great I was beginning to be so happy at this point.

So I put the bike all back together and she finally revved up like a bike should – you know it makes a guys heart pound with excitement… Trina said, “I pumped up the front tire so go go go and take it around the farm… YEA!!!”

It when fifty feet and died. The voltage regulator/rectifier quit.

As I pushed the bike back to the shop, My first thought of the day was why… Why couldn’t it have just let me ride around and have a few minutes of fun. So I am off to the motorcycle shop to get the hopefully last part and be finished. As I brought it back I said that’s it for sure this time no more projects!

So as you all know it is Top Sites Tuesday and I am trying to write my post for this week and this is where thought #2 comes in – WTF is wrong with my keyboard? The only number keys working are 5 and 6… I just said I didn’t want to do another project now I have to take apart my lap top and find the issue and most likely install a new keyboard. Trina pointed out that if I look in my accessories I will find an on screen keyboard that will help me get by for now – but If you want to shift and put an ! @ # or $ on the post it is a pain in the @$$ So I guess I will finish the bike and then work on the computer go figure.

I am not going to say no more _________ again this year!

Have a great week

Two Thoughts For Tuesday

It’s finally a sunny day here it seems as though it rains almost every day lately.

Autumn seems to be arriving fast if not already here. Cold and wet constantly!

This brings me to my first thought have you ever noticed that when there is something that needs to be taken care of but requires a sunny or at least a non rainy day it doesn’t happen for a couple weeks it’s as bad as waiting for Christmas  if you know what I mean. There have been only a couple sunny days in the last few weeks here and it falls on days in which I can’t get some chore finished, I have to work or do something else. But today it is finally sunny and I am off to get things done.

My second thought today is have you noticed that all the public bathrooms have these new soap dispensers that when you put your hand under it it gives you soap. There are some here at the boat yard and I do believe that they have a remote and camera hooked up to it. Every time I go to get soap it doesn’t want to cooperate and then I take my hand away and it spits out a tiny bit of soap on the counter. I keep trying and finally get some soap to scrub my hands and then try the automatic water, it is supposed to know that I want to rinse my hands when I put them under the faucet but NO it does the same thing and then when it comes on it only goes on for enough time to wash one or two fingers so I keep waving my hand around and nothing I just can’t get the hang of it. Maybe it’s me because a guy came in walked up to the dispenser got soap washed and was gone in no time – I wanted to rip it off the wall and stomp on it…LOL

Have a great Tuesday

Wolf
