Two Thoughts, Ok Maybe Three

I can’t believe another week has gone by already, time is just flying by with a blur.

The last time I posted we were in Turner Creek, Georgia, and since then we have made it all the way through Georgia and the swamplands full of alligators and snakes to Florida. We made really good time – we arrived here at Beach Marine in Jacksonville Beach on Saturday morning. Although we made good time it seems like weeks have past since Turner Creek.

When we left Turner Creek and headed south, we knew a storm was coming so we had to make plans ahead of time to stop. I had been watching the weather and had a plan to make it to Morningstar Marina just before the storm hit.

All good plans – or should I say best laid plans – don’t seem to always work out. About twelve o’clock mid day the sky turned ugly with dark clouds the high winds going one way and the low wind going right in our face, no sailing today. Trina and I talked about how bad it was starting to look and decided we would go a bit further and checked the charts for an “out” if it got real bad. Of course it got bad before they predicted, we should have had until three in the afternoon but not to our surprise at two o’clock the sky was dark as just before nightfall and the wind had picked up to thirty knots with super high gusts.

The boat started to feel real small as it was tossed around like a toy boat in a bath tub. We decided we would not make it to the first choice destination at this point we were getting slammed. We decided to go up a river, the South Altamaha, about four miles inland, even though it had cautions of high currents and that it is almost impossible to go in or out against the current. There was no choice at this point, we had heard over the radio the transmission of the boat called the Blue Moon that they were at the scene of another boat that had flipped and capsized – they were picking people out of the water.

If you have never been out there, the sheer terror of all this going on and you are in the same water listening to it unfold makes one realize the decisions we make can save a life. We were glad to be in the river for sure. The entrance to the river was an ugly one and I wasn’t sure we were supposed to go in there, to our luck we made it into the river at slack tide, no current. We were relieved to a degree, it seemed to be the longest four miles of the whole trip. We traveled turning the nose of the sailboat into the wind as the high gusts seem to want to put us on our side. I was very happy to see the marina up ahead after that last turn as the rain started to fall and the wind was gusting to fifty four miles an hour. The dock hands ran to the boat and helped us tie it in, it was safe and so were we. Then it was done – over just like that- in three hours the front had passed and we were sitting in the restaurant having a sandwich it was still windy but the sun even tried to come out.

This brings me to my first thought can you imagine what those guys on the other boat were thinking when they landed in the water? OMG… I couldn’t even guess myself.

We were told to head out as soon as we could in the morning to beat the tide or we would have to wait for the next tide that would occur on the next day. We gathered our things and headed out down the river the tide was high and it looked so different. We were headed out the same way we went in but it kept getting too shallow – at two points we just touched the bottom, almost ran aground, and then we realized just how lucky we were the day before, or was it luck?

This brings me to my next thought, earlier I mentioned what good time we had made and about the decisions that we make. We almost didn’t leave that morning but something said leave so we did, we made it to a perfect anchorage with the dolphins coming right to the sailboat and in just a couple days we were putting out dock lines here at Beach Marine, Jacksonville Beach, Florida, just before the next big storm. So my second thought is – It’s good to follow that gut instinct and I am glad we did the next storm lasted for three days with high winds and four inches of rain every twenty four hours!

So we are safe and sound and the sun has returned we will be here for the week and fly home next Tuesday for the holidays with the kids. Driving the car back so we can have wheels while we are here.

Tuesday’s Two Thoughts

Its hard to only express two thoughts today. I have so much on my mind, I know you find that hard to believe…lol!

I have missed posting on our trip south for some days now. All is well and we are in South Carolina, it has been very adventures and fun. So many things to see and so many navigational hazards – one cannot take things lightly on this trip.

This brings me to my first thought. We traveled through an area today that back in the eighteen hundreds they blasted the rock to connect the ICW here in South Carolina, the only issue is they did not clear out all the rock so they call this the rock pile… Many boats have been lost here to unseen rocks and the narrow channel. One must make a security call to make sure there is not another vessel coming the opposite direction because you cannot pass in this area. I was glad we made it through just fine and we were able to get in and get tied up before this big cold front comes through tonight just south of Myrtle Beach SC.

My second thought of today is, I received a call from one of my Sensais that my other Sensai had passed away yesterday. He was my Sensai for 12 years. Why is it that the good guys – some of the finest – have to be the ones that get hit the hardest. He was the man, not only just in the martial arts way, he was there for everyone teaching football at the local high school, the girls softball team, and held a karate class for twenty years or more and he was a great family man. It’s hard to understand at times. As I wrote earlier on my Facebook wall…

You taught me respect, you taught me how to be humble and compassionate towards others and to show them a better way. I learned how to accept constructive criticism and grow to be a better person. I am so glad I was your friend and even more you were my teacher- My Sensai. You will be dearly missed by us all… Rest in peace Sensai Sheets.

Tuesday’s Two Thoughts

We left the anchorage at Bear Creek at dawn and headed south it was a nice morning we even saw a deer crossing the river. I never thought they could swim so fast!

We did not get far we were in need of some fuel and there was a marina very close to the ICW, easy access so we pulled in it was only about eleven o’clock in the morning. I asked how much to get a slip for the rest of the day and we would leave tomorrow… Come to find out it was a great deal if you get a slip you get a discount on fuel and the pump station was free. They had a loaner car to take to town, hot showers, a swimming pool, laundry and happy hour from five to… all for thirty six bucks plus fuel. Well that was a no brainier – we stayed the day and left Monday morning early after a good shower and coffee of course.

It was a beautiful morning! We were able to sail a good portion of the day and at one point a dolphin jumped so close to me at the helm I could have pet him, it scared the be-Jesus out of me…lol
so we made our way down the coast to a little town called Oriental in North Carolina. It’s a cute town from what I have seen just before dark.

This brings me to my first thought, there is a marine consignment shop here and we need butt cushions. I am not sure I want a used one just the thought kinda make me -well, you get the idea. So I am going to the West Marine store and purchase a couple new ones I think this is best.

My second thought is where is this recession? There have been so many super expensive yachts that have one thousand gallon fuel tanks and have full time captains that are paid well. They fly down the inter coastal waterway like there is no tomorrow burning two hundred gallons or more of fuel each day. It’s just incredible to think of the cost just so their boat can be in warm water in case they want to entertain… Really? I guess we will stick to sailing our boat down the coast, the wind is free and I use an electric motor on the dinghy that I charge with a solar panel all day long or until I need to use it.

We leave for Morehead City in the morning early so I will let you all know how that goes, we are trying to beat the cold front that is coming in.

Have a great Tuesday!

Two Things I Will Not Do.

I have my life insurance coming due to be renewed this next July so I thought I would start early and get some quotes and check it out so I don’t have to do this in a rush. I did an application with the company I am with and they send out a retired doctor to take blood and  ask questions etc. I was told to fast for twelve hours before the test so I had nothing after nine pm that night.  So all is good I got a call and I am insurable and have no weird problems – Super… I asked how much was the premium??? Then I said HOW MUCH???

He then told me my creatinine level was a little high. This has to do with the kidney functions in our body’s. He then said I should call my doctor and that is why my policy would be higher. But it’s not life or death because they issued a policy, laugh – laugh… I am not laughing.

So I get off the phone and start Googling what the heck this was all about and put in a call to my doctor.

The first thing I wanted to know is how do I correct this and bring the level down. I found that this is caused by dehydration, to much protein, energy drinks and  some medications.

This is awesome I am an energy drink nut.  I work in the direct sun and heat and was drinking two Amp energy drinks that are loaded with this very thing – I had two the day before the test and was a bit low on water consumption, go figure.

So I get to talking to my doctor and told him the insurance told me to call him about this and what should I do. He replied – “What have you been drinking?” I told him about being in the heat and the Amp drinks. He said they told me to call “because they do not know you”,  My doctor is also a friend. He said I told you to drink lots of water everyday in the heat and none of those drinks plus they had you fast coupled with being dehydrated “you had a false positive.”

So this brings me to my first thought.  As I was Googling how to bring down the level I read that the best and fastest way to bring the creatinine level down was to eat twenty to one hundred kilograms of watermelon while sitting in a bath filled with water. Eat all the watermelon throughout a day while continually emptying your bladder into the water.

The kidneys can fall off I am not doing it – no way possible is this going to happen.

So I Googled for a slower and more cleanly way to do this and it can be done by juice fasting and parsley tea and lots of water.  Becoming a vegetarian will do the trick also.  I am not going to do that either had a steak for dinner damn-it.

My second thought of the day is I am giving up energy drinks I had no idea some of the bad things they put in these drinks they are loaded creatine that your body metabolizes as creatinine and with low water consumption this can hurt your body functions.  So I will not be drinking these anymore I am switching to juice and just water during the day.

This is how my week started coupled with this was the last day to turn in our corporate tax returns. I hope it gets better as the week progresses… I really could go for one last Starbucks dark roast double shot.

Have a great Tuesday,

Wolfbernz

Tuesday’s Two Thoughts

So here I am on the farm and it is starting to get colder now on the East coast so Fall and Winter are on their way. I am itching to get out of here and go to some far away place… But where to go this year is the question!? I don’t want to be stuck here in the snow but I don’t want to half way around the world like last year. So I am up early today and I have to hurry we have all the tree cutting equipment out (lift, chain saws etc…) and are taking out some tress today.. Wooo Hooo! I think I will supervise…LOL

My first thought is, our friend Stuart on the vessel Farr Gone that we sailed along side last season had reached his destination just recently. He blogged the whole way there, well most of the way, but I really like this last post to the Prime Minister when he arrive in Australia in August. Yes he is an Aussie and a really cool guy with a great family, had we stayed along side we would have just arrived there last week! Can you fathom ( I had to put that in there) that long on a sailboat?

Second thought this Tuesday… I think I should go west this year off to California, visit some family and see my sister, she is doing better but God only knows how her condition will turn out. We can only hope and pray.
It is nice out there if it get’s too hot just go north to cold or go south for warmth – it is a good state for weather.

I had a lot of fun last time I was there. But the other part of me says take the job offer in Bogota, Columbia, to finish out a condo building… To me this would be what I call adventure, work and vacation all in one! It is half way around the world though and I am not sure I am ready for the third world thing yet. It seems as though we just hot home, time flies by so fast.

I am off to my day job…LOL I will test the lift, you know, “Going up!” and have some fun and then supervise 🙂

Have a great Tuesday!

Here is a short clip of a little water town called Yelapa. We anchored there a couple days. It was so nice there.

Two Thoughts on Importing

So I am trying to import some items from China… I know what the heck!?!

If you look at the labels on almost everything it is from China, I never saw this until I started this whole process.

Ok. So you want to know what it is? A wind turbine, yes and it is a big one. I just can’t help it it is a good price and it is the same one they sell in the USA for six times the price… Go figure.

The wind turbine at this price will pay the money back in ten months, not bad.

First thought on this is:
Should I learn Chinese? The emails might be much easier to understand and I could learn something at the same time. A lot gets lost in the translation and I have to ask so many questions that they are probably sick of me by now!

Second thought:

I have never done something like this before and I am scared to death they are going to rip me or something will go wrong and I am waiting for the other shoe to drop!!!

If it all works out though I will start importing them to sell through our company. This is a good product and at the right price (Not gouging people) they will save money in the long run and I will continue to be my same ol’ self employed person… company motto… Larry Darrel and Darrel – anything for a buck! LOL

So I will blog about how this adventure in importing goes – the good, the bad or the down right wonderful, you just new I was going to write ugly… hehehe! Think positive 🙂

Have a great Tuesday!

Dropping Responsibility!

Something I never do…

I was at the grandson’s Sunday night, we were having a blast tearing around their house (Pay back is a B****)

So as we tore up the house and had a good time his Mom and dad said they both had the day off on Monday. Steff said we should all go to Sesame Place, it will be fun, they have a water park area too. Well when there is water involved I have a real hard time saying no and going with Jacob made it even harder so my first thought was…

How in the heck do I make it look like I am still working and go play at the same time???

I called number one son who does the same construction type business as I, “You busy tomorrow?” he replied “No why?”

Ha I had him right where I needed him.

“Oh I need you to do something for me tomorrow.” He replied “OK.”

Again perfect.

“I need you to go to the job and just paint all the primed areas with the exterior white in satin all over the house and just stay busy, can you do that for me?” He said “sure no problem.” I said “be at the shop at six thirty am.” He said “see you then!”

LOL I had it covered…

Then the phone rang number one son “What are you doing starting so early?” Busted… “Uh Well hmmmmm I am going to the water park with Jacob in PA.” Silence…………. “Oh I gotcha I am making it look good on the job?” “Uh Well kinda…”

In my mind…. hehehe

So he said “I guess see you in the morning. Oh and this is going to cost you!”

So my second thought was… OMG I am going to have so much fun… no I think it was Water park! Well maybe it was Jacob and I are going to go crazy there! No it was and we said it at the same time as he jumped in my arms “BIG BIRD!!!!!! We go to water park and see Big Big Bird.”

It was so much fun I love to do things that are so spontaneous, it makes it so exciting. Jacob and I had a blast. He has never played in the water like he did but that’s also ’cause he didn’t have grandad with him 🙂

My week started out so well and I hope all of yours did too, Have a great Tuesday and a good rest of the week.
