Weather Predictions

I woke up this morning in Elizabeth City. It was foggy and drizzling. I’ve been through here before but it’s always been pretty nice… sunny, warm… the forecast for today was sunny – no mention of fog. My first thought was to make the next weather window we have to keep moving north so we have to go North through the Dismal Swamp today.

It’s foggy and drizzling and we’re in the swamp with logs and trees and floating debris. It’s an eerie feeling to be in the swamp like this.. maybe that’s why they called it the Dismal Swamp, the fog and drizzle really help it live up to it’s name.

My second thought this morning is I need a job like the weather men have. Where I can be wrong 50% of the time, make lots of mistakes and still have a job! It would be cool to just throw out a prediction of what the weather might be and just sit back a pull in the paychecks. I could do that.

So here we are making our way. We arrived early for the first lock and we’re waiting for it to open so we can pass. Once again, not sunny. Not 67 degrees. It’s cloudy. It’s windy. It’s cold. In the Dismal Swamp.

Any day on the water in the boat is a good day though, even if it is foggy and the weather men are clueless 🙂

The Oldest City In America, are you sure?

As we sit here riding out the storm for the last few days here in Saint Marys I have met some wonderful people. We even went to the local Christ Episcopal Church on Sunday and loved it.

I am glad we are tied to a dock, it is a rough storm bouncy and noisy but safe. A sailboat close by hit the beach this morning, Yikes!

It has been brought to my attention by some local people that Saint Marys is the oldest city in America not Saint Augustine? When I asked I was told that St. Augustine was owned by the Spanish not the American colonies… Hmmmm my first thought was, I wonder if this is true. We’re the American colonies together then?

We have been walking around the small city of Saint Marys and there is a lot of history here. Some in fact that dates back to the same time as St Augustine. In the very early 1500’s Acorrding to Wikipedia, It says St. Augustine was the oldest but it shows St. Marys town not listed… My second thought was how could this old historic town that included so many people important to America’s history. The battles fought here, and not a word, hmmmm. I wonder why? This was obviously a town in the early 1500’s so what happened, I found this…

St. Marys, Georgia is the second oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States … Established by an act of the state legislature on December 5, 1792
Noted as a town almost 300 years after it was settled.

Here are a few photos of the town from the last few days ( taken between raindrops lol)

Crisfield Maryland to Deltaville Virgina

So it is day four and so far all is well. We gassed up last night as we pulled in and the guy at the marina gas dock was so cool he took our trash and let us leave the sailboat and run to the store for some bread and a few things we needed. Trina got to make her *must-stop* at the liquor store for some red wine and some whiskey in case it gets too cold it does take the edge off…LOL

We had anchored overnight and then we left at first light.

This was right before dark

I had checked the weather and it said windy and rain. Wind gusts later in the afternoon to thirty knots, I was cool with that, it’s a sailboat nothing better than to turn that motor off and watch her go.

We were really happy with the way she handled the weather when it got super windy. We hit a few sevens and a few eight knots at times – I had no idea she could sail as fast and flat as she did.

It was an overcast day but it seems as though most perfect wind days here are. About half the way here it started to rain so I asked Trina to go down below and just watch the charts for obstructions and let me know if I get off course – no sense in us both getting wet. I had my foul weather gear on and when it finally stopped raining the wind switched for about five minutes and caused me to jibe the boat the wrong direction with a small knock down at the same time. So I was pulling ropes and trying to maintain as Trina came up to lend a hand. We got her back under control but by this time the wind and swells were beginning to crash over the boat. We rolled up the foresail and just used the main…

Trina asked if I had had enough for the day and we could head due west and hide in a small cove. I agreed I had enough. This was a great decision as the wind increased to thirty knots and the swells were breaking over the boat. One covered the whole boat as it went by. We had about two hours to go and we would be in safe harbor.

The hardest part was visibility, it was about a half mile so finding markers was difficult. As we made one of our last turns to starboard we dropped sails and started the motor.

The approach to this harbor was one I was glad to get into as the sun was setting because it looks as though you would beach the boat but you make a hard to port turn at last minute and then carefully follow the markers into the creek and then the marina, very shallow I might add, don’t miss it’s one foot deep on both sides and shoaling.

So we made it in and dropped anchor, we were not the only cruisers that came in so one was giving hand signals as to the best spot. I do love the camaraderie between sail-boaters. So we dropped anchor, I watched to make sure we were good as Trina started hot coffee and dinner. The water makes me Starvingly hungry!

It all looked great so we started to settle in but with the wind so strong we do what is called
“anchor watch”. I usually take late watch… Trina came and got me and said I think we drug anchor but she grabbed so we are ok don’t panic. I agreed we had slipped and we needed to pull the anchor and re drop it… Fun to do in thirty knots with gusts to whatever.

So we pulled up and went back and dropped the anchor and did it over again low and behold the damn thing just bounced across the bottom and didn’t grab and we were blown down back into the channel. So we pulled the anchor and pulled up into the wind in the right spot one more time, we were both frozen by now – we were in our jammies – I yelled “drop it and let it all go out as fast as you can and do twice the line we should have out.” Trina was a champ did exactly as I needed and the anchor just laid in place as we drifted away and then I said “cleat it off there is enough wind she is going to yank and pull us around so hold on”, sure enough it worked she didn’t drag a bit grabbed and pulled us around.

Usually one lays a six to one but I wasn’t doing this again so I did twelve to one on the line and I am so glad it blew so hard last night the boat was almost on it’s side at times when she swung around. Trina marked our spot on the GPS chart and used it to make sure we didn’t move and I took visuals of what was around us to make sure too. I got up a few times in the night and she had not moved a bit so we were both very happy campers – the heater going, full bellies, and knowing we were going to sleep in due to high winds the next day.

So at the time of this post we will be hanging out here today 11/11/11 and doing a few repairs from wind damage and will head out tomorrow at first light for the ICW. This is a nice place to be in a bad northwest it is out of the swell and with the sun shining it isn’t very cold unless you go out into the wind.

Tuesday’s Two Thoughts

So here I am on the farm and it is starting to get colder now on the East coast so Fall and Winter are on their way. I am itching to get out of here and go to some far away place… But where to go this year is the question!? I don’t want to be stuck here in the snow but I don’t want to half way around the world like last year. So I am up early today and I have to hurry we have all the tree cutting equipment out (lift, chain saws etc…) and are taking out some tress today.. Wooo Hooo! I think I will supervise…LOL

My first thought is, our friend Stuart on the vessel Farr Gone that we sailed along side last season had reached his destination just recently. He blogged the whole way there, well most of the way, but I really like this last post to the Prime Minister when he arrive in Australia in August. Yes he is an Aussie and a really cool guy with a great family, had we stayed along side we would have just arrived there last week! Can you fathom ( I had to put that in there) that long on a sailboat?

Second thought this Tuesday… I think I should go west this year off to California, visit some family and see my sister, she is doing better but God only knows how her condition will turn out. We can only hope and pray.
It is nice out there if it get’s too hot just go north to cold or go south for warmth – it is a good state for weather.

I had a lot of fun last time I was there. But the other part of me says take the job offer in Bogota, Columbia, to finish out a condo building… To me this would be what I call adventure, work and vacation all in one! It is half way around the world though and I am not sure I am ready for the third world thing yet. It seems as though we just hot home, time flies by so fast.

I am off to my day job…LOL I will test the lift, you know, “Going up!” and have some fun and then supervise 🙂

Have a great Tuesday!

Here is a short clip of a little water town called Yelapa. We anchored there a couple days. It was so nice there.

Two Thoughts

My first thought is- What a nice ride this has been! I am sitting in the Marriott Courtyard at LAX, we just got out of the jacuzzi, and when we wake up we will fly home back to those I love and miss. I hope they are having a coffee party LOL it’s 20 degrees there. I can’t wait to see my kids and the mini monster Jacob. Beside the sailing trip I had a really good time visiting family that I rarely get to see 🙂 All of you were wonderful! I have to admit it, I ate all the Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies Sis!

My second thought is OMG OMG OMG I have been gone since November! Ok. That’s good, got that over with… I hope to get back and get some work done so we can get back out and do it again, this was a lot of fun I hope I can do more of this in the future.

I am so glad it wasn’t three thoughts, after all this traveling I’m burnt.

Top Sites Tuesday is back!

So you all know what I have been up to sailing the pacific and it has been a lot of fun we have seen so much in the last few months it’s incredible! As I have written on Wrongblog I think Mexico has received a bad rap.

I have come to realize that so many people are so happy with so little and this has caused me to reflect on my own life as to what is important to me.

When we have traveled on land I preferred to take the local buses because you get to see the real thing not a tourist point of view. When you get off onto the back roads and see how people live and how they use everything they can to make a house, a fence, a walkway… it’s awesome.

So as for me, what am I going to do now? I have some real thinking as to what I want to do next. Do I keep going South or do I hop a plane and head to the farm and kick back in the easy chair… I do miss flopping over backwards with my green covers snoring away… LOL Decisions. Decisions.

So that’s what I have been up to. I am glad to start Top Sites Tuesday back up I have missed everyone so make sure to leave me a comment so I can stop by and visit you 🙂
