Two Thoughts On Packing

Packing and getting ready to go somewhere has to be the most difficult thing to do. Standing on top of the suitcase, sitting on it, trying to fit that last piece in there and then saying oh crap I needed to put this in there…LOL

The hardest part is on the sailboat we don’t get to bring a lot of items with us on board but I don’t want to walk around with sailing attire on before we take off. So I am going to have to UPS my extras home to the kids when we shove off. The kids are great! Someone is always here ’cause their schedules are so different I won’t have to worry about my stuff getting back and all the animals will be well cared for.

I think I am going to get a vacuum seal unit that compresses clothes to nothing so I can get more on board and not have to worry so much about how much I am bringing with me. I have heard they are good for this sort of packing.

Well I can’t wait to get there. This is the last week we will have to wait so I am getting excited… This hurry up and wait crap is for the birds and who would have thought it would take so much prep just to take a darn vacation!!!

Second thought – Packaging.

I have been getting everything ready to go and giving out instructions to everyone.

Well, here is the deal, I have a switch installed on the wind and solar system so during the day I can turn off the inverters that make 110 voltage for the house to give them a break and charge the backup batteries. Nobody, I mean Nobody, will take on the responsibility to do this and make a mistake and kill the system I’ve worked on for so long… So I decided to install a simple programmable switch that will do six on and off events each day as programmed for however long I want it to be and it will be fully automated and I won’t have to touch it except to see it is working. I know, what does this have to do with packing…LOL

I received some of the parts from an electronics store and I died laughing when I saw how it was packed for shipping. Don’t get me wrong, this is an awesome piece but look at the photo.

OMG lets not get carried away…LOL a rubber band and two pieces of Styrofoam one inch long. It definitely made for a good laugh. So now I have something to keep me busy ’till we leave I am installing it today and testing for a couple of days just to make sure my idea works like it should.

Two Thoughts On Tuesday!

After such a long Monday… I didn’t finish working until 9pm last night and I started at 7am, needless to say I am pooped! I could go for a nice day off but there is so much I have to do and it’s only Tuesday. I propose we work the weekends for the same pay and take the week off… LOL

At least the weather has been nice the last couple days so it hasn’t been hard to work such long hours just tiring. I will take some photos of the latest project I am working on and post them later when I get home. I was going to do this yesterday but I was so dirty and covered in the mess from the job I didn’t want to touch my phone. I finally have a good phone and I don’t want to mess it up. It’s a touch screen and I am still getting used to it – I call some people by accident…

Today should be a much easier day I really want to get going early. All the parts to my second windmill are in and I want to start fabricating them so I can fly it. I think if I hustle I can get home in time to have some fun with it so I am going to hurry with my chores here on the farm and get outta here so I can get back early 😀

I would like to pour the concrete foundation for the windmill – it takes a three foot by three foot piece of concrete for the base! I know that’s a big piece LOL The last one I couldn’t even pick up with the tractor, I had to push it into place.

Wind Turbine Generator

Some have asked me to blog about my Wind generator and how it is going…

It seems to be going well except I have had so much to learn along the way.

Here are a few Photos of what it looks like I hope to raise it in the air over this weekend.

When I tested it yesterday it was producing three phase electric rectified to dc voltage and at 12 miles an hour wind was averaging up to 175 volts and was spinning so fast it was scary! I am adding a regulator and the dump load will be to either create hot water or use car headlights to get rid of extra current, Free lights at night I could deal with that 🙂

Two Thoughts?

I have so many ruining through my head how do I stop them for a moment to put two of them in a post!
Should I write on our economy?

How about our society… No I wrote that on Wrongblog last night… Sorry I had a little rant going on there.

How about those that drain our country of resources and that do not deserve them – they just know the system and how to work it… That would be a long boring post…

I could write about my work but you all know what I do so that would be redundant.
Oh so many thoughts…

As I sit here in my easy chair this morning gazing out the front window across my farm land, I guess I will just let my mind wonder for a few moments and write them down.

It is very cold this morning…18 degrees and it snowed a little last night. There is still snow on the ground from last week, bunny tracks all over the place as they look for food and shelter from the cold. A few bald eagles have stopped by this morning to see what’s going on on the farm today they are so beautiful and graceful to watch, I had better wait to let the Chihuahua (we call her Taco Bell) out or she might take flight! Timber (the wolf) snuck in the house to get out of the cold she is back outside early so watch out Mr. Bunny Rabbit…

The snow and Canadian geese have arrived in full force in the front of the farm there must be literally hundreds of thousands of them… I always look out the window and yell out it looks like we are on the Calamari just so the kids will correct me one more time and say, “It’s the Kalahari Dad” with some what of an attitude in their voice and I just chuckle. As I look out the window this morning from my easy chair I wonder what kind of crops I should grow come spring… I want to do something different this year.

In know that was more then one thought but as I said I would just let it flow I can’t just choose one although the first was what I see out my window so I guess that counts as one…LOL

My second thought- 11:30 am *still in the easy chair* I have been working on a design for a home energy windmill I am just about out of the planning stage. The pole is up, the wiring is from the pole to the house and the construction is about to begin on the wind generator itself. Since I am in the construction business also, I have the tools and equipment to do this in the shop here on the farm. I have plenty of room it’s a 3200 square foot shop with all the tools a man could want… I have collected them my entire life. I can’t wait to get this done, I have never been this excited to do a project – especially one that will be such a positive one. I will be able to stop taking from the infrastructure and have some electric for the mere cost of wind. It seems to always be windy here year round. The farm is on one of the high spots of the Delaware Peninsula. What got me thinking about building a windmill is that friends always would say “Oh if we are going to the farm I had better get a wind breaker.”

I guess I had better get my shoes on, I have to go to town and talk to the local diner owner, he wants to remodel the place. It’s 11:30 am or so here and the sun is up high and it has warmed up a bit so it’s time to hit the road.

It was so funny driving to town yesterday. Traffic was moving, we were laughing and talking about the day ahead – then, all of the sudden, traffic came to a screeching halt. There was almost a 5 car pile-up! We were wondering why we almost crashed when out from in front of the first car walk a very pretty chicken. The chicken was oblivious to the fact that it didn’t just get run over or that it almost caused a huge accident… it was simply crossing the road! Which brings me to one of my thoughts of the day – why did the chicken cross the road?

Going green is an important thing now-a-days. I keep thinking about what it would take to get the farm “off the grid,” you know – independent of the electric company. There seem to be only two solutions that would work here on the farm, wind or solar. In the winter the solar would be almost useless because days are so short and the sun wouldn’t be very strong, but the wind seems to always be blowing. So I have resolved to build a windmill.
