What is that BOOM?

We have lived here on the farm for about 12 or 13 years now and we are always feeling a shake the house boom. The kids would run out to see if there were jet flying over and I would say at that speed they are gone. We are in a flight patter to Dover Air Force base and have seen some really cool jets including a couple stealth jets at about five hundred feet. So here I am in the easy chair this morning and BOOM… My first thought was the kids and how they used to run for the door but since I have been sailing the bay I now know what it is.

The farm is not far from the Chesapeake Bay and they play war games with ships and helicopters etc. The BOOM is them doing live firing exercises. See I know about this because we sailed right on the edge of the area and they chased us down with a fast navy boat and a helicopter. They told us we would be OK if we held our course and they were not going to start firing until the fog lifted a bit more. It was cool to see all that goes on out there I would love to shoot one of those big guns. I am not too sure I would be good at it but it would most definitely be cool.

As I said I am still in my easy chair this morning, there has been a weather change here and it has become cold at night we went from hot to cold at night and the sun is falling faster. I know I don’t have a cold it has to be the rag weed in the fields and I have a stuffy nose and can’t stop Huh huh choooooo Sneezing so My first thought for when I get finished is to get to the store and get some allergy medicine.

I am out there in the fields every day now picking pumpkins and gourds. Check out the colors in the Gourds! All the kids that come to buy with their moms ask me if they are real. Nature makes some crazy things for us to enjoy.

So you want rain?

It amazes me that when we started the pumpkin patch we had some rain and then went into a drought situation. So we did a lot of watering during this time, and then we watered again. We have lost some plants and have over seeded in the hopes they can produce pumpkins in time.

This week seems like all the rain we needed came at once it has been raining daily and the rain gauge is about to overflow. My first thought is I can’t believe we just can’t get a little bit at a time it would be so easy. It is supposed to rain all week. I am not sure this is a good thing you don’t want pumpkins sitting in water but then again everything comes with a price.

This brings me to my second thought of the day. I get to go ride around and spray for powdery mildew and all the fun things that like to grow on pumpkins. That’s OK the part I have an issue with is the price of the spray. It’s so high priced it’s not funny – $245.00 for a quart?! I have four acres. That’s not the worst there is another type of fungus that attacks pumpkins and it takes a different type of spray… OMG the pumpkins are going to have to cost a fortune in order to make any money or there better be a bunch of them! It has been a lot of learning doing this project I am not sure if I am cut out for farming, it can be stressful. Most people think you just plant the seeds spray a little and watch the plants and money roll in, not this case it’s hard dirty work don’t let anyone tell you different.

For those of you that follow what I am up to, I do have a fun project that I have started a 1978 13.3 Boston Whaler Sport it’s a total restoration, new everything, but I will save that for another post!

Pumpkins Everywhere!

Well there’s plants so far…lol I think I have gone above and beyond on this summers binge project when I planted the four acres of pumpkins

I have been doing my research though, I want to make some really good pumpkin pie from scratch. I did find this method but it’s just not what I was going for. In Fact the face makes it appear that it’s not fun at all this way! I do want to carve one like this and sell pies with the pumpkins – hehehe

We had a couple rows that didn’t get planted and one that didn’t grow anything. It rained two inches here so my first thought was what a better time to transplant while it is so wet. We all spent well into the night digging up all the ones we planted in the back-up area in case this happened and we lost some plants. I had no idea there were that many in a row, holy crap!

Everyone was saying well how many did you think were in each followed by I thought you were going to just plant a few pumpkins!? I replied “What did you think I was going to just plant four plants” Answer “No but not thousands of them”! At this point I realized the size and scope of this project and in my head was saying things like holy crap we are going to have a real problem come fall. Where will we get the boxes from? Buyers… we need buyers and so on and so on my head was spinning it finally hit me… Holy crap!

Then my second thought kicked in… We are defiantly going to have pumpkins so we had better get on the phone and start lining up the buyers. I didn’t want to do this and then we didn’t have any pumpkins but as you can see, yep they are growing. So we are going to get started today working on finding buyers for them this fall at harvest time.

This is just one of the smaller ones with Trina on the tractor behind it.

Two Thoughts

I wonder sometimes if I should have called this the Two Thoughts Blog…LOL I never seem to be able to make it here to just blog away except for Tuesdays. Every now and then I get to sneak a post in but for the most part I am writing on another blog and not my personal one. I guess it’s a good thing we have BlogDumps Two Thoughts on Tuesday Meme.

As I sit here this morning watching the fields a buzz with all the critters that seem to fly just over the top of the grass I wonder why is it that the Alfalfa we turned under and then planted grass hay on top of, still there and the grass hay didn’t grow at all! In over ten years we have never had this happen but I can never remember a time when it was so hot, no rain and the wind blew like a heater on a cold winter day a couple weeks after it started to grow. I used the big mower and cut the front field about a month ago and the wild grass seems to have made it to where it can be cut for cow hay but the rest is a total loss.

This brings me to my next thought for the day… I would really like to try something different this year 🙂 I am thinking “Pumpkins” since the hay didn’t grow it would be a waste just to let the land sit there. This year seems to be a dry one so they wouldn’t get too much water and they just might do well. It would also be fun to look out the front window and see pumpkins everywhere! I don’t want to grow any award winning ones you know those giant pumpkins that take up a whole trailer, I am thinking more of a simple cash crop or a come pick your own pumpkin. How cool would that be, it would be so much fun especially for the little ones. We don’t have one like this in our immediate area so it might just work. So now I have a mission for the day… Seeds where to get the best deal on them….. Hmmmmm, So off I go in search of the pumpkin seeds.
