Top Sites Tuesday – Two Thoughts

My First thought is: Where is the recession?

Since I left for our cruise, I looked around everywhere. We spent late November and the first week of December in L.A California. There were people buying all kinds of things, the parking lots were full. I know it was around Christmas but it wasn’t stopping, spending was everywhere. As We hit the coast of Mexico I did see the impact that the U.S. media has had on the country. Most of all the resorts and Marinas we sailed into were empty for the most part. Almost every port we came into we were able to choose where we wanted to stay due to everyone wanting us there.

(I know this is a bit off track but I have to say I never saw any problems or met on person from Mexico that was ever mean or angry. Most everyone was well dressed, polite and helpful even off the beaten path where most would not go. I would feel safer there then downtown Baltimore.)

As far as this recession goes I am bringing this up because since I’ve come home I have been paying attention to all the construction, service trucks on the road everywhere I go. I see people in all the Big Box lumber stores buying plants and stuff to fix up the house – it doesn’t seem to have slowed down even with gas prices as they keep going up I see the same cars on the road even on days off when they should be home squirreling their money and waiting for doom to arrive. I know the housing market is as they say “crashed” but it’s not that bad for those who didn’t buy during the inflated market. Those that bought before are still ok because prices never fell as far down as the price of a house bought prior to the housing crash in fact, the market is actually still good.

Has this just affected the inexperienced young or the person who was with a company a long time and was paid well and costs needed to be cut? I just can’t figure it out where does everyone get all the money they are spending? Could it be everyone is on unemployment and food stamps Showing my age on that one… Food cards?

My second thought of the day is gas prices… Now this is ridiculous. Everyone knows the trickle effect that this has on our nation as a whole. I haven’t seen or heard anything but that gas will be five or six bucks a gallon by summer. Am I the only one or is it always by summer when families that have done their part to save for a trip with the kids or the husband and wife that did the same and have worked so hard, are they being taken advantage of?

The work season on the east coast is in full swing by summer and all the work trucks are scurrying around trying to make as much money as they can to save for winter when there is no work – is this really fair. Oil companies are making out just fine I don’t see a shortage of money on their part. Now if it were an election year prices would be at an all time low, that’s just how I see it. Sometimes I think we should have a national don’t drive on Saturday and Sundays unless you have to and don’t use their gas! I bet if we cut out unnecessary driving we could put a hurt on the oil companies and drive prices down. I wonder if that would affect them.

Off to work I go to one of the construction sites we have going, ninety miles round trip in the work truck at 12 mpg, and almost four dollars a gallon. I guess I need to get a lot done to make the ride worth the gas money spent!

Have a great Tuesday

Wolf

I know what you mean about the seeing evidence of all the shopping and such in this economy. Here is Kansas City the housing market really has tanked because of the glut of forclosures and short sales but still the restaurants and shopping centers are seem busy. Hubby and I think that maybe the malls and such are busy but people aren’t spending. Using it more for a deversion. The price of gas here isn’t keeping people home yet. Gas in the midwest is high but far less than other places. I am still holding out hope that the job market will improve. While I am not seeing that here that certainly would be a step in the right direction.

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for dropping by 🙂
You may be right maybe window shopping for comfort and something to do.
It would be nice to see more employed and the work force stronger than it has been.

Happy Tuesday!
Wolf

What get me about the gas is the way they change prices on a regular basis. The dealers bought the gas in their tanks at one price, but they continue to raise the price on it. But don’t get me going.
