Top Sites Tuesday #65 – The Oil Crisis in the Gulf

I don’t voice my opinion too often but this has to be the worst man-made disaster ever, OK nuclear testing and using the bomb was probably the worst but this is horrible. But 12 to 25 thousand barrels a day? I don’t understand why any company would open a hole in the Earth that is this large and has so much pressure without more then just a safety valve – even if it had two safety valves this is no small potato.

The Gulf Disaster will be an ongoing clean up until way past the estimated Fall clean up end of this disaster and that’s if they stop it now. I think the White House has to step it up and get something done here.

When I first heard of this disaster I thought, Ok we have had spills but they get them cleaned up… Then the reality of the size of this has set in and I can’t understand why our government would allow such a well to be drilled so close to our shores that could impact our lives the way this is beginning to, the key word is “beginning” The ecology of the ocean in this area will be affected way past the clean up. Ocean environments do not just happen over night this will take years to get back to some type of normalcy. What is really amazing to me is the fine they talk about that BP will pay per barrel of oil spilled. The fine cost I heard is about per barrel is around 4000 dollars a barrel and they are talking about it costing them about a couple billion in fines so far… For this large oil company this is not very much money for the impact that this has caused and will continue to cause for some time to come. The ecomomy of the gulf region has started to decline, the small business that has been beaten down by our already ruined economy is now on the edge of total disaster. It’s a hard thing for me to understand that when Haiti had it’s disaster people around the world banned together and sent money and supplies so what about the people along the Gulf Coast that are being laid off and sent home and the businesses that are going to shut down due to this giant oil spill?

I know BP has had a lot to say – they have apologized and have helped some business with claims and they have paid. At least they are not pulling an Exxon-style move and fighting all the way to the bank! The problem is money isn’t going to be the only thing to fix this issue. It’s going to take a lot of man power to take this size project on and I really think we need to get beyond who what and why and just get busy and send people from everywhere to clean up the mess.

As I have begun to experiment with wind power and building my own little power plant here on the farm I sit and think the wind blows everyday down there on the Gulf. I lived down there for some years and a large windmill or ten wouldn’t be such a disaster.

I really don’t understand why Delaware has shot down the offshore wind farm. I really hope it is revived as this is free God given energy that’s clean and natural – the sun and the wind, isn’t that what it’s for?

In the last eight months I have learned there are alternatives and we as the people need to demand more of our governments to do more.
If a giant wind turbine falls over the fish would just say “Look the new condos are finally finished” !
It something to think about.

I know this can be done and I have finished my wind mills they actually make the electric meter go backwards when both wind mills are hooked up with just one the meter goes real slow. Here is a short video of the small wind turbine hooked up. I have documented this project all along the way to show it can be done even on a small scale.

Here is what happens when a large industrial turbine goes crazy and blows up in high wind… Notice there is no oil spill no real damage except to this expensive piece of equipment.

Great post, it is true that we need to demand more choices other than oil and gas so we do not destroy our planet with oil spills.

Here’s your click …….

Hi AngelBaby
Thanks, The wind turbine did blow to pieces though! I’ll be by in a little while 🙂

At the moment, choices exist on the small scale but not on the large scale. Unfortunately, rogue companies like BP can afford to just pay fines when they break the law … maybe what has to happen is that oil production drops enough to make alternative sources practical … but that will sure be hard on people with limited incomes. You are an unusual fello, Wolff, that you’d build your own windmills … most of us need something done for us energy-wise. As I said to AngelBaby (who probably thinks I’m a right winger)the science of alternative energy on a grand sacle is really hard. Nice post.

Bud aka Older Eyes

You’re right about alternatives, Wolf. There are alternative fuel sources that really should get more attention and investigation. But first – this oil spill has got to be stopped and cleaned up!

(Clicks! for your excellent wind turbine…great job!)
