This Weeks Two Thoughts

It’s Tuesday once again so it’s “Two Thoughts On Tuesday

As I have gone through life I have been self employed for most of it, except a few years in my younger days. I have had many employees in many different businesses. Some seem to stick in my mind more than others. I am not sure if it is just because we got along well or that they were just that talented and I can appreciate that. I know, where is this going.

Well, I received a message on my cell phone from an employee that worked for me 15 years ago in the big state of Texas (Yes it’s true. it’s the only place you can stand in mud up to your butt and still have dust blow in your face!)

So I called him back and he was trying to find me to see how I was doing and if I was OK. He had worked for me for years he started young about 20 or 21 he didn’t know much but he would listen and do what he was asked to do and would learn as time went on.

I told him one day in the Millwork shop “You know, if you learn how all this is done and work hard to really learn how this is done you can go anywhere in the world and work, you don’t even have to speak the language and you can be successful” He replied with a “Cool, I want to learn this”

Well the years past and I shut down the Milllwork shop and moved the business to the East Coast. He went on to strike out on his own. It was really nice to hear from him and how well he was doing, we caught up on a lot of things and laughed at some good times that we had back in the day. We stayed on the phone for a long time. Nearing the end of the conversation he said ” Seriously Paul, I have never had the opportunity to thank you” I said “What for” He said” You told me and taught me so much and I remember what you said “learn this, work hard, keep your nose clean and you will do well” he went on to say “you have fed and housed my family for the last fifteen years from what you taught me and I just want to thank you.”

I didn’t know what to say except your welcome and that I would be there for him if he needed me.

That brings me to my second thought, I have always tried to help everyone that has worked for me or asked me for help the best I could all my life. But this was a nice call to know that I made a difference in one young mans life and that he is married and has a son that he will do the same for as he grows up – it makes my day, no it makes my whole life. I always wondered whatever happened to this guy or that one but to get a call that I made a difference is nice.

I was given a plaque at the boy scouts one year for my time that I put in and it says

“In decades to come it will not matter what land I owned or what bank account I had with lots of money or the car I drove. I will not be remembered for these things but the difference I made in one young mans life today will last a life time”

I guess today I found out how true it really is, this is a happy Tuesday for sure 🙂

That is a nice thing to have someone reconnect to say thank you and what a perfect example with the saying on the plaque.

I think you have every right to smile. Good for you.

Wow, that must’ve felt really nice to hear. That was really nice of him to take the time to thank you like that. Brightens my morning to know that there are appreciative people in this world like that. 🙂

I think most of us who have been bosses or employers … and have done the job with integrity …. know that we’ve helped some people along in their own lives. One that actually tracks us down and tells us is a rare treat indeed. Very nice …

Now, who the heck is Paul? 🙂
