Two Thoughts

Life is funny, when we were sailing it was easy to jump up at dawn and go again. Now that we are home and there are things to do everywhere I find I don’t want to get out of my comfy bed in the morning. The roaring wood stove warming the house that has a slight spring chill, oh I missed this- hmmm so comfy!

My first thought when I got up this morning was, crap I have a couple jobs to look at, the field is tilled and needs planting and oh the gourds from last year need to be washed and Put in the sun to finish drying. Crap the tractor needs work… Then Trina said don’t forget we talked about a BlogDumps overhaul, we need some changes to the site!

My second thought was we’ve only been home a week and here we go again. It looks like it could be a busy spring and summer in all aspects of life.  This year we are growing Lima Beans, Yellow Squash, Spinach, Zucchini, Green Beans, Tomatoes, Cauliflower, Green Onions, and an assortment of Herbs.  Farming this year will be interesting with all the varieties of vegetables and herbs, this will be the largest crop of more then one type ever… Yikes… I hope we can pull it off!

I’m a little late posting today, I could tell you I had to go to the job early but the truth is I slept until the last moment and then ran to the job. I am going to have a talk with myself about this laziness, better yet I could just fire myself and go back to the boat lol

It feels strange to be gone for 5 months, then step right back into the madness of work and children. It’s good to be home.

Atlantic ICW Chesapeake Bay Farm New post Sailing Top Sites Tuesday

Home Sweet Home

Last Friday around 11:45am we decided to make the jump from Norfolk, Virginia, to Cambridge Maryland. It’s about 150 miles and usually takes three stops. We filled the tanks full of fuel just in case we decided to skip a stop. The wind was screaming from behind us, gusting 25 to 30 mph as we headed into the Chesapeake. The prediction was for the wind to calm as the day went along with a wind shift after midnight. Later in the day about 3:30 the wind

We decided to skip our first stop at Deltaville, Virginia, and head to Solomans Island, Maryland, but this meant sailing into the night. Well rested we decided to go for it and make time, arriving in Solomans at 4:00am. So far this had become a long haul with Trina and me trading out for a turn at the helm to go below to warm by the heater. The heater did make it a bit more tolerable though. After checking the weather, wind conditions and fuel we decided to catch a short nap and go onto Cambridge. The weather had moved in a bit quicker, it was now to rain on Sunday with snow in the afternoon, the bay is not the place to be in these conditions!

Trina and I both had our turn of falling out, going below to rest while the other took over. Finally Saturday afternoon the sun came out, we made the right choice because it was a bit warmer. I raised the pirate flag and Conch Republic flag from the Keys as we made the last five miles into the marina.

We ran twenty five hours and crossed the bay, about 155 miles or so. Tired and hungry we were picked up and taken to eat, now I was much more tired. They were right about Sunday it never really got above freezing. The sun came out for a short time so we headed back to the boat. Some how the boat was parked in the wrong slip… Missed it by that much lol

It was an adventurous trip to say the least but I am glad we made the right decisions and got here before the storm blew in.

My first though when we arrived at the farm was… Holy Crap, it’s still winter what happened to spring? I thought I was seeing things, it was just a joke when I said get out the snow shovels we are almost home!

My second thought after watching the news and seeing the big picture was… It won’t last the sun comes out tomorrow with a warming trend and I really don’t want to be on the water for the April thunderstorms that come up the East Coast.

It’s good to be home spending the rest of the week with the the son and grandson Jacob and getting back in the swing of things. The shop will be opened for business this week and its time to fire up the tractors for another adventure on the farm 🙂

Have a great Tuesday

Hurricane Sandy – HMS Bounty

I think I mentioned we would go for a late departure in a previous post after Hurricane season… sometimes we make good choices and get lucky. I would not like to be out in that mess for sure. I have been in large seas and high winds offshore and it’s no picnic.
I had a whole other post going on but then this came to mind and those that know me I have the attention span , well you get it.

I saw this on the net today and what a shame to see a sailing vessel go down and it’s crew picked up. One is dead and the captain is missing. My first thought was Holy Crap this was no small sailboat and it was eighteen foot seas what happened? It seems as though they lost power and the pumps could not keep up so the captain ordered the crew off the boat. I don’t understand why the captain thought he could go around or out run this storm. Once he was out there they realized they would be out in the mess for a week instead a two or three days.

Trina and I had the pleasure of seeing this magnificent sailing vessel take a look at what happened.

This was the shot from the U.S. Coast Guard.

My first thought was thinking of the crew in the water – not the place to be. My God what a shame to say the least. I am so glad that the Coast Guard is there for us. Here is the video of them pulling people out of the water. Now if I am not mistaken the altitude altitude is a warning and look how close to the waves they get. Hats off to the rescue team from Elizabeth City!

We ventured out from the farm today to see what had happened and to return some movies. As we were leaving the farm there was a Bald Eagle in the flooded field on the back of the farm. It seems as though our area had been spared for the most part there were a few downed trees, one car we saw crushed by a large tree. We made our way to the marina where we just knew there would be damage and thank goodness there was none that I could see other than a few dock boards floating away. My second thought was Oh thank God not even a scratch, but that would be typical, I did just renew all insurances so of course.

We are back on the farm and just waiting out the mess it’s still here windy and raining. The wind is to continue for the next few days but it will be sunny and then rain again. Again we will put off our departure until next week.

Have a great Tuesday,
Wolfbernz

Just Another Day In Paradise

“Just another day in paradise” was said as we finished taking about weather to run the last of the Pumpkins to the Dover, Delaware, market to sell or not. I said “yeah the parts for the Boston whaler are in so we could just finish that and we’ll use the rest of the pumpkins for the Halloween party this Saturday.” It was that time, everyone said see you tomorrow…I think we are pretty well done.

I walked into the shop and saw the pile that had to go to the boat and my first thought was Paradise, Huh?

All this stuff has to go back on the boat. The new radio has to be installed, the breaker panel Fixed, Dingy Transported and the bottom of the boat gone over I’m thinking the work has just begun if we are to leave by the third of November.

So here it is Tuesday morning a colder fall one, Woofy will not scoot over nor will he get up! It’s like having a large anchor on ones legs. As I look out the window all the leaves are starting to turn and my second thought is I bet the Dismal Swamp looks pretty good today. The fall leaves turning, the bears swimming across the water or a deer jumping out of the water onto the bank as if it has been chased. I can’t wait to go there again and leave my mark where everyone that travels through by boat leaves theirs, the date and direction headed so the friends we make on the water know you have been by.

I feel like the lone ranger at this point the marina is empty and most all have left but hurricane season has not closed so I will wait… A little cold but that doesn’t last too long when headed South.

Have a great Tuesday,
Wolf

Bumming All Day!

Oh I wish I had the time to write all about the things that go on in my daily life it has not seemed to stop for months now. Work – work – work and the fitting in a Friday night session with friends and a few glasses of wine, the selling of Pumpkins all weekend long…

It seems as though even when I am not working I feel as though I am working. I can’t wait to see if we can pull off getting out of here by the first week of November.

I finally crashed , sore, tired,  couldn’t get up… I guess since I had no one counting on me to be somewhere or do something I thought I would just lay here.

It was really weird to wake up in this situation.  I normally have forgotten what most of  the day will bring by the second cup of coffee thank God for lists, there is always so much to do.

So here is what I did, my first thought was well if I am going to do nothing, sleep all day, steal all the pillows, be a bum all day, I should NetFlix all day and then go out to eat later and then nap and sleep some more.  So that is what I did. We had a great un- eventful day other than being socked for pillow poaching.

A friend that helps on the farm said as I came out late “I was worried you were comatose in there and you didn’t answer the phone” he said  and I laughed when Trina said “they are off today”. It has been awhile since I have heard that and can’t wait until we are far from it all where cell phones and communications are non existent for an extended break.

I was going to give life a second thought but forget it I think I will stay right here and watch another show 🙂

What is that BOOM?

We have lived here on the farm for about 12 or 13 years now and we are always feeling a shake the house boom. The kids would run out to see if there were jet flying over and I would say at that speed they are gone. We are in a flight patter to Dover Air Force base and have seen some really cool jets including a couple stealth jets at about five hundred feet. So here I am in the easy chair this morning and BOOM… My first thought was the kids and how they used to run for the door but since I have been sailing the bay I now know what it is.

The farm is not far from the Chesapeake Bay and they play war games with ships and helicopters etc. The BOOM is them doing live firing exercises. See I know about this because we sailed right on the edge of the area and they chased us down with a fast navy boat and a helicopter. They told us we would be OK if we held our course and they were not going to start firing until the fog lifted a bit more. It was cool to see all that goes on out there I would love to shoot one of those big guns. I am not too sure I would be good at it but it would most definitely be cool.

As I said I am still in my easy chair this morning, there has been a weather change here and it has become cold at night we went from hot to cold at night and the sun is falling faster. I know I don’t have a cold it has to be the rag weed in the fields and I have a stuffy nose and can’t stop Huh huh choooooo Sneezing so My first thought for when I get finished is to get to the store and get some allergy medicine.

I am out there in the fields every day now picking pumpkins and gourds. Check out the colors in the Gourds! All the kids that come to buy with their moms ask me if they are real. Nature makes some crazy things for us to enjoy.
